THE TRUTH ABOUT ORGANIC HAIR PRODUCTS

Beauty and skincare have been latching onto the concept of 'organic' for the longest time and to this day, this word has gained cult status as people become more conscious and weary of the chemicals they use.

Last year, the organic and natural cosmetics industry hit an all-time high of $7 billion! Botanical brands have been growing 20% annually and are expected to double in market share in the coming years.

People aren't just eating organic, they are bathing, wearing, breathing and sleeping on it. (heard of the organic bed anyone?)

But here's the truth…

Organic isn't really organic unless…

It is certified by the USDA which is the ONLY organization that is qualified to certify something (anything) as organic.

Basically, you can't say something is organic unless all ingredients used, even in the packaging and production, meet USDA's stringent standards required for organic food.

But here's the catch…

USDA certified organic product is still allowed a certain percentage of non-organic ingredients.

This means that even though a product contains 70% organic ingredients and the rest well…nondescript…it can be still labeled 'organic'.

Which is a pretty scary thing because a beauty product can contain 70% water and 30% synthetic chemicals and still be labeled 'organic'. Uh huh…

Loads of personal care companies do it. And they all claim to be 'natural' and 'organic'.

So how do you really know if organic is truly organic?

Always read the labels and check them thoroughly.

If the USDA label is missing but the word 'organic' or 'natural' is plastered all over the packaging warning sirens should come up. The product might not be organic after all. GASP!

But organic doesn't necessarily mean the product will suit you completely. Organic products can sometimes cause allergic reaction or after effects depending on your allergies or sensitiveness to the ingredients.

So while it may be 100% organic, it might not necessarily be better for your skin. Now that's food for thought.

NEXT HAIR COLOUR CRAZE - YOU GAME?

Electric blue, lime green or shocking pink... Ever wonder what hair colour is too much for you? Well, the answer is that nothing is really too much if you know how to get it done right.

According to this article in The New York Times, hair trend is leaving the safe palette and going for shock locks.

LONG before Charlotte Free, the of-the-moment fashion model, became known for her brightly colored hair, which ranges from pale to neon pink, women in New York City were dousing their manes in Crayola hues. The coloring process has not changed much since the days of ’80s punk rockers and ’90s grunge enthusiasts (jars of Manic Panic dye are still a popular way to get the look), but the patterns, placement and mood of these “shock locks” have evolved.

Some women are even wearing them to the office, as does Numidas Prasarn, 26, who works at the visitor center at the Brooklyn Museum. She keeps her purple hair long and simply styled.

“It is a conscious effort to address how I feel every day,” Ms. Prasarn said of the coordination her coif requires. “Do I feel like going with this color or fighting against it?”

Ms. Prasarn’s hair is monochromatic, but Sally Hershberger, a celebrity hairstylist with salons in New York and Los Angeles, cited “cascading tips” as one way of incorporating brightness that “feels fresh now.” (Ombré — a gradation of color — and tie-dye effects have also become popular.)

Ms. Hershberger added that the entertainers Nicki Minaj, Hayley Williams and Katy Perry, all of whom have gone bright in one fashion or another, have all influenced her customers.

“Because of them, a lot of the hip chicks want their hair done like that,” she said. Coloring extensions has become popular, she said. “And they’re also doing pink fading into purple."

First up are some quick hair tips from Annita Hisham.

Upon analyzing your hair:

1. Use appropriate shampoo for your hair type.

2. It is a must to apply conditioner after every wash as it helps to close hair cuticles.

3. It is good to use the right “leave-in treatment” after every wash because it will help to protect and fortify hair.

4. Before styling, use styling products to protect hair from direct heat and hold the desired style till the next wash.

5. Once in every four to six weeks, do an intensive hair treatment at the salon to add moisture and protein with the right pH balance. Do home treatment once a week or every 10 days in between salon visits. This helps to make hair healthy.
